FAQ
-
The gi is required for two reasons:
It is a tool to learn how to throw efficiently and effectively, using grip, leverage, and control.
It is a training safety device similar to boxing gloves, focus mitts, or a kick shield, and is for the safety and comfort of the person receiving the technique.
-
Safety, period.
Most students do not know how to accept technique applied to them correctly and safely. There is more friction with sneakers and the mat than barefoot and the mat. It is safer to accept technique without the excess friction as a novice.
We will be using our legs and feet to trap, trip, reap, and hook our opponent. We want to avoid accidental bumps, bruises, and abrasions caused by the shoes.
It is harder to do the techniques with shoes than without. It’s like trying to tie your shoes with gloves on. You can do it, but that isn’t how you initially learned. Is it?
-
Yes, we will apply the throws we learned to no-gi situations in the second seminar.
-
Nope. Throwing someone without a gi can be done very effectively after learning how to compensate for the lack of grip and leverage the gi offers. First, learn how the throw works at a basic level then increase the difficulty. Trust me, you’re probably muscling your no-gi throws.
-
No. You will be thrown, but the focus will be on the mechanics of the throw: the grip, the setup, the entrance, the off balancing, and the lift. The throw (fall) only happens after all the other parts are correct. We should be closer to a 20:1 setup to fall ratio.
-
Buy, beg, borrow, or steal one. Don can get you one at a discount. They are available on Amazon or many other online merchants. You do NOT need an expensive competition rated gi. A typical gi set (top/bottom/belt) is in the neighborhood of $100+/-.
-
No, they are not meant for throwing. They will rip easily.
-
Yes, please do!
-
No. I will provide you a list of throws in the curriculum to help you on your krav maga throwing/takedown journey.
-
No. Actually, the less you (think you) know the better.
-
No.

Wash the pants with hot water and dry in the dryer on high. They will fit a pre-schooler in no time. You should not be tripping over your gi pants.
